First 2 Weeks A Major Success!
Dear Members and Interested Parties,

It has been 2 weeks as an organisation, but we are surely making some waves. Although, launching this new organization in July was not the best timing with the Stampede and many people on holidays we have had some great interest. Next week we will be revealing ourselves to not only the media in this great city, but to all the Alderman as well with a news release and letter from Don Leonardo, our Executive Director.

Not only do we now have 31 paid up members, we have sent out invoices for many, many more and our phones are ringing like crazy! Once all the membership payments arrive, we expect to be over 200 members by the end of August.

Welcome to the following new members: Vince Collin, Jim Blake, Adam Singh, Henry Krygier, Valerie Gaudon, Steven T. Anderson, David West, Dave Koop, Chad McCormick, Charles Vander Griendt, Clay Frotten, David Crutcher, Kent Fowler, Kirk Taylor, Faisal Tariq, Dave Snetsinger, Tod Hall, Debra Howe, Erik Gregson, Valerie Gaudon, Glen Stark, Steven Anderson, Wolf Rothman, Paul Romaniuk, Becky Mensah, Donna Dahl, Michael Marks, Michael Lepitre, Chau Han, Fred Nixon and David Romano.

Solid Advisory Council
We have a solid Advisory Council in place. We have David West as our Vice Chairman, Donna Dahl as our Media Relations Chair, Don Leonardo as our Executive Director / Treasurer and hopefully Jon Lord former Alderman and former MLA will serve as Chairman. We will keep you informed. If you wish to get involved at the Council level, give Don Leonardo a call at 257-8218 or e-mail dleonardo@merchantsofcalgary.com

Launch Party Was A Success
The event at the Kilt & Caber in Calgary's South East was a success with several people in attendance all enjoying themselves. Many new members joined and some great alliances to reduce taxes for the residential ratepayer were made. People ranging from a former Executive Assistant to a Member of Parliament, well known business advocates to a leadership candidate for the new Alberta Alliance was even in attendance.

We Have Our Own Blog
The Calgary Merchants Association is also the first group that we know of that has it's own Blog. This on-line site is an opportunity for members and non-members a like to discuss the issues that concern them. Feel free to state your opinion about the issues of the day or just browse the comments of others. Our Blog is www.calgarymerchants.blogspot.com

A DIfferent Kind Of Golf Tournament
Every organization has a Golf Tournament, but ours is a radically different one. The other organizations have been invited (along with our members) to take part in ours. On Friday August 26th, the Calgary Merchants Association will be hosting the "Calgary Business Group Golf Challenge" at Eaglequest Golf Course in Douglasdale.

The event will be sporting an 11am shotgun start- four-man scramble. This particular tournament will become a favorite of the players. It will be known for the fun, the competitive nature and its easy play, it gives the business group teams an opportunity to network with our members and other businesses in the area in a relaxed environment. It also enables groups to make strategic alliances and work together for a better Calgary. In the future this could become a major fund raising event for Calgary's Charities. Each Business Group could have money donated to a charity of their choice. So come out to this ground breaking event.

We challenge all groups to join us at the Eaglequest Golf Course in Douglasdale on the 26th of August 2005 for this the 1st Annual "Calgary Business Group Golf Challenge" and enter your team of four players.

All Calgary's Business Groups and Associations are eligible to enter their team of four players in this tournament all you have to do is call 403-257-8218 or fax us at 403-236-2605 or email Don Leonardo at dleonardo@merchantsofcalgary.com to enter. Cost for the event is $100 per person and includes golf and a Roast Beef dinner with all the trimmings at the end.
